The IVF centre at Vasco
Vasco is the IVF centre. The embryology laboratory, the operating theatre and the beds are at Pai Hospital, Vaddem, Vasco-da-Gama. Egg collection, embryo transfer, ICSI, embryo freezing, micro-TESE, laparoscopy and hysteroscopy are done here and nowhere else in the practice. Vasco is also a full clinic in its own right, with consultations, scans, ovulation induction and IUI for anyone living nearby.
The clinics at Panjim, Margao and Mapusa are where you are seen. This is where the work with eggs and embryos is actually done.
That distinction is worth understanding, because it is the most useful thing anyone can check about a fertility clinic and almost nobody is told to check it.
Why the laboratory is in one place
An egg outside the body is a fragile thing. From the moment it is collected, the egg lives in an incubator held at body temperature, in a controlled gas mixture, in fluid whose acidity is watched. The air supply itself is filtered, to keep out the fumes that ordinary buildings are full of. The embryologist works next door to the operating theatre because minutes and degrees both count.
That is a room you build once and run properly. It is not something you put in four shopfronts. Which is why an honest practice has one laboratory — and why a clinic advertising IVF at several addresses is either running one laboratory quietly, or using somebody else's.
We run one, and it is ours, inside our own hospital. Your eggs do not leave the building and are not handed to another company. The theatre is ours too, so a case is never waiting on somebody else's list.
What is done at Vasco
The laboratory
- Egg collection — a short day-care procedure under light anaesthesia, guided by ultrasound. You go home the same day.
- IVF and ICSI — eggs and sperm brought together in a dish, or a single sperm injected directly into an egg under a high-powered microscope.
- Embryo culture and transfer — the embryo passed into the womb through a soft, fine tube. No anaesthesia, no cutting.
- Freezing — embryos frozen for a later transfer. This is also how a cycle is kept safe when the ovaries have responded too strongly, which is our standing answer to OHSS.
The operating theatre
- Micro-TESE — searching the testis for sperm under an operating microscope when there is none in the semen (see male infertility). Done in the same session as the ICSI, so whatever is found goes straight next door.
- Laparoscopy — keyhole surgery through two or three small cuts, for the tubes, the ovaries and the outside of the uterus.
- Hysteroscopy — a thin telescope passed through the cervix to see and treat the inside of the uterus. Nothing is cut anywhere.
And everything the other clinics do
If you live in Vasco, Vaddem, Chicalim, Dabolim, Cortalim, Sancoale, Bogmalo or Mormugao, this is simply your local clinic as well: consultation, follicle monitoring, ovulation induction (including for PCOS), IUI, semen analysis and pregnancy care. You have on your doorstep the journey the others are driven for.
Two cautions that belong beside that list. The medicines used to ripen eggs can ripen more than one, so twins become more likely, and a twin pregnancy is harder on mother and babies than one baby at a time. That is also why the number of embryos transferred is settled with you beforehand, and kept low. And egg collection, though safe and short, is still a procedure: bleeding, infection and the ordinary risks of anaesthesia exist, are uncommon, and are explained to you before the day rather than afterwards.
If you are coming from Panjim, Margao or Mapusa
You do not drive yourself. On the days your treatment needs this building — egg collection, embryo transfer, or an operation — we send a car for you, free of cost, from your clinic to the hospital and back again afterwards. Since egg collection is done under light anaesthesia, being driven home is not a courtesy but the sensible way to go.
Dr. Pai put those cars on the road for a plain reason: he was losing patients who could manage the treatment but not the travelling. Tell us your date on WhatsApp and the pick-up is arranged with it.
Who does the procedures
Dr. Mayur Pai — MBBS, MS (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), IVF and fertility specialist and laparoscopic surgeon, fifteen years in practice — does the egg collections, the transfers and the surgery himself. That means the person who planned your cycle is the person carrying it out. Three doctors are on board, so a qualified doctor is available for an emergency or an urgent scan. The laboratory does full IVF including ICSI, and single-use disposables are used throughout.
Finding us

Questions patients ask about Vasco
Is Vasco where the IVF actually happens?
Yes. The embryology laboratory and the operating theatre are here, at Pai Hospital, Vaddem. Egg collection, ICSI, embryo culture, freezing and transfer all happen in this building, and this is the only place in the practice where they happen.
Is anything sent to a laboratory outside the hospital?
No. The laboratory is ours, inside Pai Hospital, Vaddem, Vasco-da-Gama, a few steps from the operating theatre. That is the whole point of running one properly rather than several thinly.
I live in Vasco. Do I have to go anywhere else for anything?
No. Vasco is a full clinic as well as the laboratory, so consultations, scans, injections, IUI and pregnancy care are all here too. You have the shortest journey of anyone we treat.
How long will I be at the hospital on egg collection day?
At Pai Hospital, Vasco, the procedure itself is short and done under light anaesthesia, and you go home the same day, but plan for a morning rather than half an hour, since there is preparation before and recovery afterwards. Someone should be with you, and you should not drive yourself home.
Are there beds if something needs watching?
Yes. Pai Hospital, Vasco is a hospital, not a consulting room: there are beds, a theatre and doctors on call, which is why an overnight stay is a decision rather than a crisis.
I am travelling to Goa for treatment. Can most of it be arranged around one trip?
Sometimes, but not always, because a cycle is governed by your own body's timing rather than by a calendar. Send your reports on WhatsApp first and we will tell you honestly what would need to happen when, before you book anything.
